Technical Data Sheets

technical presentation

QCI’s  have had successes selling 5-way diverters with unidirectional electric actuators.  Every 90-degree change in valve position diverts product to another tank/process/filling station.  With our inherent full port (pipe or tube) connections in extreme majority of our porting and sizes, we deliver high flows with low pressure drops to arrest many of the customers’ past concerns about multi-ports.  And keep in mind; we are replacing, typically, four two-way valves and, better yet, four (electric, in this case,) actuators.  QCI’s saves the clients substantial funds by decreasing extra piping runs, connections, and installation time while keeping process output flow high.  We have high economy of scale in applications like this.  The same goes for our 3 and 4-ways that would replace two or three two-way valves.  The “LL” 3-way can actually replace two three-ways or six two-ways!  When the valves are actuated (pneumatic, electric or hydraulic) we continue to be a very inexpensive selection while supplying quality valving and topworks.  Remember, we’re quarter-turn, too!

On the same subject keep in mind a few valve sizes where we do not offer full port in our standard “L” or “T” porting.  Our 1/2'’piped valves have a 3/8” orifice and the 2” valves have a close –to-full port 1.875” flow path.  All multi-port ¾” valves have a 0.688” i.d.  The lesser used 1 ¼” size valves (2,3,4, and 5-way) utilize a 1” valve body and have 1.000” porting.  Full port is a strength in our standard product but reference the QCI website for exact valve inside diameters and Cvs.  See QCI’s technical information.

Some of our competition produces a secondary line of full-ports that are the same or similar to our valves as it relates to pipe and tube i.d. and sometimes flow patterns.  Yet they advertise high Cvs than we do, sometimes better than 50% more—even with a bottom common port (vertical run) for their 3-ways.  Can’t be when comparing apples-to-apples!  All of our flow capacities are based on certified laboratory tests performed in the early 90’s by Colorado Engineering Experimental Station, Inc. in conjunction with the University of Colorado School of Engineering.  And a reminder—when we discuss our Tri-Clamp and Cherry Burrell I-Line valves, they are clamp connected to tubing and not pipe.  Since tube is measured by the o.d. and standard stainless steel sanitary tubing in ½”-3” has a wall thickness of .065, our tube i.d. is exactly 0.13” (twice .065) under “tube size.”  For instance a 1” TC or CB connected QCI valve has a constant i.d. of .0870 inches—the same as the tubing i.d.  Accordingly, this precludes recesses or line i.d. changes from the tubing and through our valves.   As you know, pipe is measured on the i.d.  And keep in mind that our 2,3, and 4-ways have connections on the same plane—it is just our 5-way that has the bottom common connection.

QCI’s temperature ratings on each valve size (1/4” through 8”) are the same.  It is all a matter of rotor seal and “O” Ring material selection.  As stated before, we can do temperature ratings up to 450 degrees F (on all sizes) and in some cases up to 600 degrees F on application.  And this means 2-way through 5-way valves!

Our torque ratings are conservative.  As long as the liquid or gas is clean, our values can be used without safety factors.  As always, if the fluid is dirty, has solids in it, or is highly viscous, etc. then consult QCI or use factors that have been published by other valve/actuator manufacturers.

Remember, our multi-port valves save the need for redundant actuators, solenoids pilots, indicator/switch output topworks and tubing on instrument packages.  Keep in mind; on our 4 and 5-ways, we are diverting flow.  Full downstream shutoff requires a 2-way valve under the system’s common supply port(s).
